Guardian Lions in bronze and marble have stood watch over thresholds of Chinese architecture for centuries, and were more recently popularized as Foo Dogs in Western cultures.

The pairs are actually male and female, with the male on the right wresting control over a globe, representing the world; and the female on the left holding a cub, representing childrearing and continuing the family line.
